National blitz on truckies but police figures show they're not the main danger

Last year 56 people died in truck collisions, 10 per cent more than the previous year.

The heavy vehicle driver was not at fault in 65 per cent of the 48 collisions.

Police have called on all road users to change their behaviour when sharing the road with heavy vehicles.

Over the next month, police nationwide will run Operation Austrans, directed towards heavy vehicle road safety.

It will focus on highways connecting Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth, and will include drug-testing of truck drivers and checking of their work diaries.

Supt Neville Taylor said there were four double fatalities and two triple fatalities among the 48 fatal collisions involving heavy vehicles in 2010.

Busted bypass causes headaches for trucking and motorists

The Victorian town of Morwell is at a standstill following the three-month long closure of a section of the Princes Freeway due to heavy rain.

There is debate over who is responsible for a leaking stormwater drain on the Morwell Bypass that needs to be lined before the road can be reopened, leaving truck drivers and residents frustrated.

There is no date as to when the freeway will reopen, with the Victorian Government and electricity generator Hazelwood Power currently arguing over who will pay to fix the drain.

Gippsland trucking companies are being forced to travel up to 30 minutes extra on each round trip to Melbourne due to traffic diversions through the centre of the town, adding costs to their business and causing traffic pain to Morwell residents.

NTC to consult industry on A-trailer fees

Policy makers will consult the trucking industry on A-trailer registration fees after complaints that the current charging system is eating away bottom lines and disadvantaging operators.

The National Transport Commission (NTC) has responded to an industry-led campaign to reform annual A-trailer charges, which are currently $6,372 and will rise by another 2.4 percent from July 1.

It says it has received complaints that charges are affecting cash flow, while others have contacted the NTC asking why safer combinations using A-trailers – such as BAB and ABB quads – are charged more than traditional road trains.

“In the coming weeks the NTC intends to engage with a wider range of industry stakeholders to develop a more detailed understanding of the issues and possible solutions,” the NTC says in a statement.

Toowoomba Range reopens after truck-bus collision

A key freight route south-west of Brisbane has reopened after an early morning collision between a truck and passenger bus that left five people injured.

The eastbound lanes of the Toowoomba Range near Redwood have reopened, but police officers are still at the scene of the traffic crash.

While investigations are ongoing, Queensland Police says a truck travelling down the range lost control and collided with the coach carrying 43 passengers.

A police statement says four passengers were taken to Toowoomba Hospital with minor injuries.

“A road worker was also injured, and was transported to Toowoomba Hospital with lower leg injuries,” Queensland Police says.

“A bus has been arranged for the un-injured passengers to continue their journey.”
